The R-haplogroup chapter in its genetic register has already been
Written. This chapter is the civilizational register. What the
Yamnaya did to the world it entered.
And what they entered
Was Cucuteni-Trypillia.
Cucuteni-Trypillia.
One of the largest and least-known civilizations of the European
Neolithic. From approximately fifty-two hundred to thirty-five
Hundred BCE, a sprawling culture occupied what is now eastern
Romania, Moldova, and central Ukraine. They built settlements
Larger than any other European settlements of the period—some of
The Cucuteni-Trypillia proto-cities, like Talianki and Maidanetske,
Covered three hundred or more hectares and housed up to fifteen
Thousand people. By the standards of the time, these were gigantic.
Larger than contemporary Egyptian or Mesopotamian settlements.
And yet almost nothing of them survived. Why? Because the
Cucuteni-Trypillia people had a strange and unique custom: they
Burned their settlements down. Every sixty or eighty years, they
Deliberately torched their own houses, razed their own cities, and
Rebuilt nearby on fresh ground. The pattern is consistent across
Centuries. Whole proto-cities reduced to ash. Whole populations
Migrating a few miles, rebuilding, and burning again. No one fully
Understands why. Ritual renewal? Pest control? Religious cycling?
Whatever the reason, it means the Cucuteni-Trypillia people are
Visible to archaeology only in the burn layers. Their houses were
Painted with spirals, red and white and black patterns. Their pottery
Was among the most beautiful of the European Neolithic—thin-walled,
Geometrically patterned, astonishingly refined. They worshipped a
Mother goddess, like most of Neolithic Europe. They had no walls
Around their cities. No weapons of war were deposited in their
Burials. The pre-existing evidence suggests a peaceful, female-
Centered, artistically sophisticated civilization that lived by
Farming, by gathering, by making pottery of extraordinary beauty.
And then, around thirty-five hundred BCE, it ended.
The Yamnaya arrived.
The R-haplogroup horsemen of the
Pontic-Caspian steppe, armed with the bronze axe and the domesticated
Horse and the corded-ware pot, rode west into the Cucuteni-Trypillia
Heartland. And the Cucuteni-Trypillia civilization—peaceful,
Unwalled, goddess-centered—had no answer to the new arrivals.
Within a few generations, the proto-cities stopped being rebuilt.
The painted pottery stopped being made. The spirals disappeared
From the houses. The mother-goddess figurines stopped being
Modeled in clay. And in the archaeological layers that cover
The Cucuteni-Trypillia sites, a new material culture appears:
Corded-ware pottery, stone battle-axes, single-grave burials
Oriented on an east-west axis with the body in a flexed position,
Male skeletons with evidence of horseback riding in the bone
Wear patterns. The Yamnaya culture.
The displacement is
One of the most total in European prehistory. Ancient DNA
Studies published in the twenty-teens showed that the Cucuteni-Trypillia
Male population was essentially wiped out. The female population
Persisted—the women were, in substantial numbers, absorbed into
The incoming Yamnaya communities—but the male Y-chromosome
Signature of Cucuteni-Trypillia (mostly G and I) was almost
Entirely replaced by R1b. This is a pattern that will repeat
Across the Yamnaya's path: male extermination or displacement,
Female absorption, a genetic signature of conquest that archaeology
Could not have seen until DNA analysis made it visible.
And the
Religious displacement was equally total. The mother goddess was
Replaced by the sky father. The spiral was replaced by the wheel.
The peaceful agricultural village was replaced by the patriarchal
Warrior band. The female-centered kinship of Cucuteni-Trypillia
Was replaced by the patrilineal inheritance of Yamnaya. And the
Indo-European languages—ancestor of Greek and Latin and Sanskrit
And all their daughters—took the place of whatever language the
Cucuteni-Trypillia peoples had spoken. That language is lost.
We have no record of it. The great European Neolithic linguistic
Substrate is gone, with only a few possible relics (like Basque)
Surviving into the historical period.
From the Cucuteni-Trypillia
Heartland, the Yamnaya continued west. The Corded Ware culture
Spread across central and northern Europe. The Beaker Culture
Pushed west to Iberia and north to Britain and Ireland. By
Twenty-five hundred BCE, the Indo-European populations had
Reached the Atlantic coast. The whole of Europe had been
Overlaid by the R-haplogroup migration. And the languages that
Emerged from this overlay are the languages that almost every
European still speaks today. Celtic. Germanic. Italic (which
Would become Latin and its Romance daughters). Slavic. Baltic.
All from the same source. All from the Yamnaya expansion out of
The Pontic-Caspian steppe.
Meanwhile, other branches of
The Yamnaya expansion moved south and east. Into Anatolia, where
A very early branch became the Hittites (covered later). Into
Iran and Central Asia, where later migrations would become the
Indo-Iranian peoples. Into India, where—around fifteen hundred
BCE—R1a-carrying peoples entered through the Khyber Pass and
The Hindu Kush and gradually merged with the remnant population
Of the collapsing Indus Valley civilization. That is the Aryan
Migration, covered in a later chapter.
The Yamnaya expansion
Is, along with the original out-of-Africa migration, one of the
Two most consequential population movements in human history. It
Carried Indo-European languages across most of Eurasia. It
Established patriarchal, patrilineal social structures across the
Whole zone. It replaced earlier mother-goddess religions with
Sky-father religions everywhere it went. And the genetic signature
Of R1a and R1b—the two great Yamnaya Y-chromosome haplogroups—
Is today dominant across essentially all of Europe and much of
India and Iran. Billions of people are Yamnaya's grandchildren.
And the Gaiad's account of this is complex, because the Gaiad
Does not simply celebrate it. The Yamnaya expansion was, in
Many places, a destruction. The peaceful mother-goddess cultures
Of old Europe—Cucuteni-Trypillia, Minoan Crete (partially),
The builders of Malta and Stonehenge (at least in the earlier
Phases)—were overrun and largely erased. The feminine religious
Substrate of old Europe was submerged under the patriarchal
Sky-father. The goddess did not die, but she was demoted, converted
Into the consort of the new king-god, transformed into Hera or
Frigg or Parvati, lesser than the male divine. And the peoples
Who had been the builders of old Europe—the ones who carved the
Venus figurines, the ones who raised the first Neolithic temples,
The ones whose cultural legacy lay in spiral patterns and dolphin-
Frescoes and fat-lady statues—were, in their male lineage, largely
Exterminated. A genetic bottleneck is visible in the Y-chromosome
Data for European populations around thirty-five hundred BCE. The
Yamnaya males replaced the pre-existing males. The pre-existing
Females were absorbed. This was not a peaceful migration. It was,
By any modern standard, a genocide—or several genocides, spread
Across the continent over a thousand years.
The Gaiad does not simplify this. The Yamnaya brought many things:
The horse, the wheel, the Indo-European languages, the heroic
Warrior ethos that would eventually produce Homeric epic and the
Vedic hymns and the Eddaic poetry. These are genuine cultural
Achievements. But they were achieved at the cost of destroying
The civilizations they overrode. The mother goddess of old Europe
Did not survive. Her worshippers were killed or absorbed. Her
Language was forgotten. Her symbols were rewritten into the
Iconography of the sky-father's consort. And the European who
Walks through the museum today and admires the Cucuteni-Trypillia
Pottery is, in most cases, a R1b-carrier—a descendant of the
People who destroyed the civilization that made the pottery he
Admires. The body that walks through the museum and the hands
That shaped the pot on display are not, in genealogical terms,
Connected. The European cultural inheritance includes both the
Destroyers and the destroyed, layered together in the same
Continent and often in the same individual. The old Europe was
Erased. The new Europe was built on its graves. And the new Europe
Brought its own achievements—but never honestly reckoned with
What it had replaced. Until, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries,
Scholars like Marija Gimbutas began to reconstruct what had been
Lost. Her argument—that old Europe had been a peaceful, female-
Centered, goddess-worshipping civilization that the Indo-European
Invaders destroyed—was controversial in its time and remains
Debated today. But the broad archaeological and genetic picture has
Substantially vindicated her. The old Europe existed. The Yamnaya
Overran it. The cultural and religious shift from goddess to sky-
Father was real. And the genetic evidence of that shift is
Unambiguous.
The Gaiad holds this complexity. The Indo-European
Achievement is real, and its cost is real, and both are part of
The history. The Yamnaya expansion is not a clean victory to
Celebrate; it is a pivot, and the pivot has a shadow. The shadow
Is the old Europe that was lost. The light is the new Europe that
Was built. Both are in the record. Both are in the body. And the
Task of honest genealogy is to hold them together.
Yamnaya. The horse. The wheel. The Indo-European tongue. The
Sky-father. The patriarchal warrior band. The replacement of old
Europe with new Europe. The cultural package that made the world
We still live in. And the grave of the world we replaced.
Yamnaya. The steppe expansion. The Indo-European arrival. Stand.
