Gaiad: Chapter 142

Manu and Yemo — R and the Yamnaya

Taurus 2 · Day of Year 142

And R came back. From the deep east, from the cold And frozen shores of Lake Baikal, the lineage that had Reached the edge of Siberia turned and walked west. The bold And homeward migration that would become the single largest Expansion of any haplogroup in the entire human tree. R left the lake. R crossed the taiga. R crossed The Ural Mountains. R descended into the grasslands—the great sea Of grass that stretches from the Carpathians to the Altai, crossed And crossed again by every subsequent steppe migration. And There, on the Pontic-Caspian steppe, R settled. And there, Over the following thousands of years, a very specific set of Events took place that would change the linguistic and genetic Map of most of the world. R's sons were two: R1a and R1b. And in the Gaiad's reading, they are Manu and Yemo. Manu. Yemo. The Proto-Indo-European founding pair. The first man and His twin. The cosmogonic pair whose story, reconstructed from the Linguistic evidence of the daughter traditions, tells the myth Of the first sacrifice. Yemo is sacrificed by Manu to create The world's order. Out of Yemo's body, the cosmos is made. The head becomes the sky. The eyes become the sun and moon. The bone Becomes the mountains. The blood becomes the rivers. The plaid And woven fabric of social order is woven from Yemo's parts: The priest comes from the head, the warrior from the chest, The farmer from the loins, the servant from the feet. The harts And cattle of the world come from Yemo's flesh. The rest Of the creation myth follows from this single primal sacrifice. And this myth survives, in fragments, in the daughter languages: Mannus and Ymir in the Germanic tradition—where Ymir is the twice- Sacrificed frost-giant whose body becomes the world. The strangeness And dismemberment of Ymir is the reflex of the primal myth In the Germanic branch. Manu and Yama in the Indian tradition—where Yama is the first man to die, who becomes the god of death and the Underworld. And Manu, the survivor of the flood, is the ancestor Of all humans. Romulus and Remus in the Roman tradition—where The fratricide is preserved (one brother kills the other) but the Cosmogonic payoff is attenuated. Romulus kills Remus and founds Rome, but Remus's body does not become the world—his death is simply The founding sacrifice of a single city. Gayomart in the Iranian Tradition, the first man, whose seed spawns the first couple. All Of these are reflexes of the same primal myth. The twin myth Spread across the whole Indo-European language family because it was The founding myth of the Indo-European people. And the Indo-European People were R1a and R1b. The haplogroups and the myth traveled Together. The myth was the story the R men told about themselves. The haplogroups were the biological signature of the men who carried The story. Together they are the R lineage, the boomerang lineage, The lineage that came back from the east and made the west. And what they did with the steppe, before they expanded, was To domesticate the horse. And the horse changed everything. The horse was domesticated on the Pontic-Caspian steppe, somewhere Around five thousand years ago, by the pre-Yamnaya cultures of the Region. Botai, in northern Kazakhstan, has the earliest clear Evidence of horse domestication—bit wear on horse teeth from around Three thousand five hundred BCE. And once the horse was domesticated, The mobility of the steppe peoples became something unprecedented In human history. A man on a horse can cover twenty, thirty, fifty Miles a day—distances that on foot would have taken a week. Herds Can be managed across vast territories. Warfare can be conducted at A range and speed that foot-based cultures cannot match. The horse Is the technology that makes the steppe into the fastest-moving Zone of human habitation. And the R-carrying peoples of the steppe Are the first beneficiaries. The Yamnaya culture emerges around Three thousand three hundred BCE. The Yamnaya are horse-riders, Cattle-herders, makers of kurgan burial mounds across the Pontic-Caspian grasslands. And from the Yamnaya homeland, the Expansion begins. In every direction. West: into Europe. The Corded Ware culture, the Beaker culture, the subsequent waves Of bronze-age European populations—all descend, in substantial Percentages, from the Yamnaya migration westward. Ancient DNA Studies published in the twenty-tens showed that a substantial Portion of modern European male Y-chromosomes derive from an Expansion originating on the Pontic-Caspian steppe around Three thousand BCE. The signature is unmistakable: R1b is Overwhelmingly dominant in Western Europe. R1a is dominant in Eastern Europe. The two great R sub-branches swept across the Continent, overlaying the earlier G (Neolithic farmer) layer And the even earlier I (hunter-gatherer) layer. The modern European male is a three-layer cake. I at the bottom. G in the Middle. R at the top. And the percentages vary by region: Sardinia Is still heavily G-dominated. The Balkans and Scandinavia retain Heavy I frequencies. But R is the dominant layer almost everywhere. And south: into Central Asia, through the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex, and eventually into India. The Aryan migration is R1a's Southern expansion. The chariot-driving, horse-riding, Vedic-hymn- Chanting peoples who enter India around fifteen hundred BCE and Merge with the existing H-and-L Indus Valley population to create The civilization that will eventually compose the Vedas and the Mahabharata and the Ramayana—these are R1a-carrying men. The Aryan peoples are, in the Gaiad's reading, R1a. The language they Bring is Proto-Indo-Iranian. It will become Sanskrit in India and Avestan in Iran, and it will become the basis for the entire Indo-Iranian language family. And east: into Tarim Basin of what is Now Xinjiang, where the Tocharians—speakers of the eastern-most Indo-European language branch—established themselves, leaving blond And red-haired mummies in the desert that bewildered later Chinese Travelers. The Tocharians are an outlier of the R1a expansion, The branch that went furthest east before being absorbed. The Yamnaya expansion is, in the Gaiad's reading, the single largest Genetic and linguistic event of the Bronze Age. It recasts the Population of Europe. It recasts the population of India. It creates The Indo-European language family in its historical form—the family That includes all the Romance languages, all the Germanic languages, All the Slavic languages, all the Indo-Iranian languages, Greek, Armenian, Albanian, Celtic, and the extinct Anatolian and Tocharian branches. Half of all living humans speak an Indo-European language as their Native tongue. And that half speaks Indo-European because, five Thousand years ago, a single haplogroup lineage—R, the boomerang Lineage, the lineage that went east to Baikal and then turned around And came back—domesticated the horse, invented the chariot, developed A religious and linguistic package that would spread across half Of Eurasia, and rode out of the steppe in every direction at once. Manu and Yemo. R1a and R1b. The twin founding pair of the Indo-European world. The myth that said: one brother sacrificed the Other to make the cosmos. The haplogroup-pair that said: we will Cover half the known world with our descendants. Both were true. The Yamnaya expansion is the mythic and the genetic and the linguistic All at once. It is the moment when a single steppe culture, having Mastered the horse and the wheel and the bronze axe, explodes outward And reshapes Eurasia for the rest of recorded history. The Cucuteni-Trypillia civilization of Moldova and Ukraine—the Great pre-Yamnaya European culture, the one that built giant wooden Cities painted with spirals, the one that worshipped the goddess Of the old Europe—is burned to the ground by the Yamnaya advance. The peaceful pre-IE agricultural culture is replaced by the warlike Horse-riding patriarchal culture. The goddess is replaced by the Sky-father. The painted pottery is replaced by the corded-ware pot. The spiral is replaced by the wheel. The mother is replaced by the King. And the languages of old Europe—whatever they were, we will Never know—are replaced by Proto-Indo-European and its daughters. This is the pivot. This is the change. This is the moment when The Europe we know today begins. Indo-European-speaking, patrilineal, Patriarchal, horse-riding, sky-father-worshipping. Everything that Makes modern Europe distinctively itself was brought, in seed form, By the Yamnaya expansion. And every subsequent European civilization—the Celts, the Greeks, the Romans, the Germanic tribes, the Slavs—is a downstream elaboration Of the Yamnaya cultural package. Rome is Yamnaya's grandchild. Christianity, with its sky-father God, is the great-great-grandchild Of the Yamnaya religious imagination. And the modern world—most Of it—walks in paths first laid by the R-carrying men who rode West out of the Pontic-Caspian steppe at the dawn of the Bronze Age. Manu sacrificed Yemo and made the world. R1a and R1b spread across Eurasia and made the Indo-European World. The myth and the haplogroup are the same story, told twice—once In the grammar of genealogy, once in the grammar of myth. R. The Yamnaya. The boomerang. The Indo-European. Stand.
